Paris Markets - Part II - Marche des Enfants Rouges

La Marche des Enfants Rouges, named after the orphans dressed in red who used to live in a building on this property, is the oldest, and probably most authentic, covered food market in Paris. It was established in 1628 and refurbished in 1980. It is a lively center for this (my) neighborhood in the Marais—very small compared with other markets but with lots of character and a neighborhood feel.It is open every morning until the early afternoon and sometimes in the late afternoon into the evening. There’s an espresso machine (very good coffee!), flowers, cheese, wines, an Asian food stand (there’s a big Asian population in this quartier), butcher, vegetables, jellies, poultry guy, fish guy, etc., etc. I wish I would’ve spent more time there— on rue de Bretagne—only a hop, skip, and a jump out of my front door.
