Speaking of the Pompidou (where these pictures were taken)… Paris has turned into Geek Central—maybe not as much as Seattle or any Starbucks or McDonalds in the world. But since Mayor Delanoe vowed to transform Paris into the most “connected capital in the world” by deploying 400 (at last count) WiFi (pronounced “wee-fee”) access points around the city, you see people (like this) sitting on the steps at Pompidou and even on the ground in front of the museum (he’s right in front of the huge column with the flower pot). This is because the Marais quartier (3rd and 4th arrondissements) was one of the first to jump on the band (or geek) wagon and offer free WiFi. There’s a web site, of course (www.journaldunet.com/wifi/), where you can find the hotspots in France (beware, though, because not all hotspots are free). By June of this year, government buildings and some city parks and monuments will dole out WiFi to anyone able to hook up. And even the RATP (Metro/bus) system is announcing its plan to allow clients to access WiFi while riding the trains through the Metro tunnels!
